Breens Deli

An inspiring brunch

Its gastronomic proposal reminds us that in the vegetable world there is everything we need to nourish ourselves and that healthy eating is not at all incompatible with enjoyment.

There are more and more restaurants and cafeterias that elaborate a one hundred percent vegetarian and vegan cuisine in Mallorca, and we are delighted, especially if in addition to ensuring animal welfare they are committed to local and seasonal products and share a holistic view of food, that which nourishes us inside and out. And this is exactly how Breens Deli has been described to us, a café-restaurant that we really want to discover.

We come to Port d'Andratx because this place has been recommended to us and we have found the perfect excuse to get lost in the area. The day looks cloudy, but the sky is clearing up on the way to Breens Deli  and, upon arrival, Rebecca and Max -its owners- invite us to take a seat on the terrace.

Breens Deli 's menu has a breakfast section and a lunch section, which can be perfectly adapted to brunch time -whatever time it is- because everything is, to our eyes, very, very appetizing: grilled cheese sandwich, pancakes with fresh fruit, porridge, lentil salad or falafel wrap are some of their proposals among which we find the imprint of the culinary cultures of Africa and the Orient.

While we decide which dishes to enjoy, we load up on vitamin D under the sun and order our drinks from a selection that is also extremely seductive -and colorful-. We opt for a Mango Cocos Lassi smoothie, a refreshing and delicious blend of mango, pineapple, agave syrup and coconut water, with an intense yellow color, which is an explosion of flavors in every sip we take, and a Superfood juice, a reddish cocktail full of vitamins and nutrients thanks to the combination of beet, carrot, apple, lime and ginger.

The drinks are delicious, so we arrived at the dishes with very high expectations. We ordered a breakfast plate, a succulent proposal with scrambled organic eggs -also available in a vegan version with tofu-, avocado, caramelized onion, tomato, radish and a generous piece of homemade bread -flavorful and with an exquisite texture- with seeds. An apparently simple combination, but healthy, satiating and tasty. Sometimes -most of the time- our body doesn't ask for more.

The surprise comes with Shakshuka, a breakfast of Arabic origin with a base of tomato, bell pepper, onion and garlic, topped with egg, feta cheese and parsley, accompanied by two slices of sourdough bread. The recipe, which arrives at our table served in an earthenware dish, surprises us for two irrefutable reasons: the combination is exotic on our palate and the aroma it gives off -and gives us a trip to distant lands- is absolutely delicious. A way of having breakfast, celebrating a brunch or enjoying a lunch -any time seems ideal to enjoy these dishes- different from the Mediterranean custom, but surely exquisite.

If we had to define the Breens Deli experience in just one word, we would say that it is inspiring, and we would not do it for nothing. In fact, we can think of three reasons that justify this adjective: its gastronomic proposal reminds us that in the vegetable world there is everything we need to nourish ourselves and that healthy eating is not at all incompatible with enjoyment. In addition, we love the fact that more and more restaurants are cooking to the rhythm of the seasons and transferring the seasonality of the countryside to their kitchens.

As if this were not enough, Breens Deli  is committed to local produce, which always contributes to promoting the local economy and, of course, responds to a sustainable purpose. As we said, an inspiring experience that, sooner rather than later, we will repeat.
