The Marivent Gardens, a historical and natural treasure nestled in the west of Palma, are a must-see destination for lovers of nature and tranquility. This unique garden, which covers an area of 9,155 square meters, is a masterful example of a Mediterranean garden, and its history dates back to 1925, when it was designed and built by the Egyptian engineer and collector Joan de Saridakis.
The garden is located inside the Marivent Palace and, over the years, has undergone a remarkable evolution. Today, it is home to around 40 plant species, most of them native to the region, giving it a unique character and a beauty that captures the natural charms of the Mediterranean. One of the most interesting facets of the gardens is its history as a museum. From 1965 to 1972, this site housed the personal museum of Joan de Saridakis, which displayed a fascinating collection of art and antiquities. Although the museum is no longer present, the imprint of its legacy lives on in the elegance and charm of the gardens.
Since 1975, Marivent has become the official residence of the Spanish royal family in Mallorca. This fact adds an aura of prestige and authenticity to this already interesting place. One of the highlights of the place is its permanent exhibition of 12 sculptures by Joan Miró, one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. These sculptures are strategically distributed throughout the garden, creating a harmonious dialogue between art and nature. The fusion of Miró's creations with the natural environment is a unique experience that enriches the visit to the site.
One of the advantages of the gardens is that they are not usually crowded with visitors, which allows visitors to enjoy a calm and serene atmosphere. This makes it an ideal place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and immerse oneself in the natural beauty and serenity of the surroundings. The garden design is simple yet captivating. Dirt paths wind through lush hedges and trees offering shade and shelter from the Mallorcan sun. Along these paths there are benches strategically placed where visitors can rest and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of the garden.
The gentle sound of a fountain adds a touch of musicality to the surroundings, creating an even more relaxing atmosphere. The murmur of the water, combined with the chirping of the birds that frequent the garden, provides a natural soundtrack that invites reflection and contemplation. As you stroll through the place, you will be surrounded by the fragrances of the Mediterranean plants, and you can admire the palette of colors offered by the flowers and shrubs. The harmony between natural and artificial elements creates a truly spectacular setting that invites photography and meditation.
In short, the Marivent Gardens are a destination worth exploring in Palma. Their rich history, connection to art, natural beauty and tranquil atmosphere make them an oasis of serenity in the middle of the city. Whether to enjoy a relaxing stroll, to explore the artistic legacy of Joan Miró or simply to disconnect from the outside world, this place offers an unforgettable experience that will immerse you completely in its beauty and calm.
